Magistrate’s Court Man To Stand Trial On Charge Of Raping Girl

Harold Gavin Page, aged 26. a workman, was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court on a change of raping a 10-year-old girl at New Brighton on February 23, when he appeared in the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday. Depositions were taken before Messrs D. V. Wilson and W. I Okte, Justices at the Peace. Sergeant C. D. McMeeking prosecuted. Page, who was represented by Mr G. D. G. Bailey, pleaded not guilty after depositions had been taken. Tliere was no application for bail. Dr. J. S Wilson said he examined the girl at 1030 pm. on February 23 and he found Injuries which were consistent with her having been raped. He had been told she was mentally retarded and that she was in a special class at school Detective-Sergeant P. J. O’Donovan said an identification parade was conducted in the foyer of a Waimate picture theatre and the complainant picked Page as the man who had assaulted her. (Before Messrs R. H. Harris

and H. T. Fuller, Justices of the Peace) ACCUSED DISCHARGED Neil Ernest Nicholas Dempsey, aged 22, and Ernest Harold Bland, aged 20, were discharged after depositions had been taken on changes of burglary on or •bout February 26 and unlawfully getting into a car on the same date.

Senior-Sergeant G. M. Cleary prosecuted. Mr W. A. Wilson appeared for both accused.

The accused were charged with burgling the premises of Martin Bums (South Island), Ltd., electrical hardware wholesalers, 135 Tuam street Roes Ferguson Sutton, at present serving a prison sentence for car conversion and burglary, said he broke into Martin Burns, Ltd., and stole electric irons and shavers and broke open a cash box. After a party in Armagh street he took Bland and Dempsey home. The car he used during the evening had been converted. He said neither of the accused asked him where he got it from.

Detective-Constable J. P. Downes said both accused denied knowing the car or the property were stolen. (Before Mr A. P. Biair, S.M.) BURGLED FLAT

Charged with burglary in a flat in Shakespeare road between March 24 and April

3, Patuki Reihana, aged 18. was convicted and remanded on ball to May 3 for sentence. She pleaded guilty to the charge. Reihana told the police she had gone to the flat because she thought she hagl loft her purse there. When she could not find her purse she took other property. SHIP DESERTION

Pleading guilty to deserting from the Port Nelson at Timaru on March 26, Danny Anthony "IXicker, aged 16, and John Thomas Brown, aged 18, were convicted and remanded on bail pending deportation under provisions of the Shipping and Seamen Act.

IGNORED NOTICES On two charges of tailing to comply with notices to dear long grass and noxious weeda on March 1, Aubrey Hay, of 136 McFaddens road, was fined £3 and £3.

Charles Clephsne Guinness Noble, of 18 Giandovey road, was fined £1 on a similar charge. Neither defendant appeared. NO TV LICENCE

For having an unlicensed television set on September 18. Ronald WiUtom Weaver wm fined £3, He did not appear.
