TENDERS FOR BRIDGE
Public Opening At Waimairi
A difference of more than £lOOO between the highest and lowest tenders for a new one-way bridge over the Styx river was revealed when tenders were opened in public for the first time under the Waimairi County Council's new policy. Tenders for the council's contracts have formerly been opened at the monthly meetings. Under the new system, the tenders will be opened one day before each meeting to enable the council's engineering staff to analyse the prices and to answer councillors’ queries.
When tenders were opened by the chairman of the council (Mr J I. Colligan) on Wednesday, all three contractors who tendered for the job were represented The tenders were as follows: G. W. Pearson and Sons, Ltd. (Rangiora), £3980 9s 2d' Jeal and Skurr (Oxford) £4404 Ils 3d; Wilkins and Davies Construction Company (Christchurch). £5083 Pearsons’ tender was last evening accepted by the council at its monthly meeting after a brief discussion in committee. The council estimated the job would cost about £4675.
The new concrete bridge will comprise two 35ft spans and will be built over the Styx river in Earlham street. Brooklands, about three miles from the Chaneys railway station.
