Stayers Shape Well In Final Training Gallops

Studio, Picright and William David were partnered in the fastest mile in training at Riccarton yesterday.

The effort of these three Sockburn Handicap rivals, noted best for their ability on firm ground, raised hopes of a much improved track for the third day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting tomorrow.

It was generally expected that fast times would be out of the question on ground which had been heavily affected by rain earlier in the week. But, surprisingly, the inside of the big trial grass, where all the fast work took place, provided fast footing.

Studio (Reggett) and Picright (Hadfield) worked up to strong gallop quickly and William David (N. Eastwood) dropped a couple of lengths behind. Studio, Picright and William David ran into the last half-mile in that order at length intervals but William David dashed quickly around the outer and had a clear lead as they started the run home. He was eased in the last furlong and ended the gallop a length and a half behind his companions. Their time for the mile was Imin 42 3-5 sec and they ran the last half in 50 4-seec. Zinder (Stokes) was let off fairly lightly. He worked over a round at three-quarter pace, ran his last half-mile in 54sec and was allowed to stretch out a little over the last three furlongs which took 40sec. Count Pedro (Low) and Marlborough (Beck) took Imin 47sec for their mile and came home together from the half in 52 2-ssec. Sprinted Home Desert Chief (Marsh) worked leisurely from the mile and a quarter around to the half-mile, then sprinted home brilliantly in 49 4-ssec. He was timed to run the last mile in Imin 48 4-ssec and his last three furlongs in 36 3-ssec.

Kastanea (Swanson) shaped well to leave seven furlongs

behind in Imin 30 l-ssec, his last half-mile in 50 3-ssec. Lyn Leigh (Smith) completed a similar solo task in Imin 30 3-ssec and came home from the half-mile in 51 2-ssec. On Account (Collins) was shading Donna Maria (Swanson) after running the last four of seven furlongs in 51 2-ssec.

Newbrook (Mein) was galloping easily alongside Foxy Boy (Humphries) at the end of six furlongs in Imin 18 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 4-ssec.

Fonteroy (Mein) led Gold Key (Williams) throughout five furlongs along the back in Imin 4sec. The first halfmile took 51 l-ssec. Fastest Half

Grand Salute (Beck) was responsible for the fastest half-mile. He dashed home in 49 3-ssec and led Topple (Wilson) by a length and a half at the finish. Yosemite (Mrs Clutterbuck) and Canadiana (Stokes) recorded 51 4-ssec for the last half-mile of an easy six furlongs Gold Shower (N. Eastwood) worked solo over the same ground and took 53sec for her last half-mile. Bona Fide (R. J. Skelton) and Beach Gold (Wilder) led Broker (Reriti) by three lengths at the end of half a

mile in 50 4-Seec. Bona Fide, which makes a fresh start in the Richmond Handicap, appeared to be doing best at the finish. Vitamise (N. Eastwood) was to have worked easily over a round but even under restraint he managed to run his last half-mile in 55 l-ssec. Vault (N. Eastwood) left bis half-mile behind in 52 1-5 sec and was still keen to keep going when he reached the crossing. Seaend (Low) and Depending (Beck) worked keenly together over the last four of five furlongs in 50 4-ssec.

Neron (Hobbs) and Crackle (Wilder) kept together in a similar task and came home from the half-mile in 52 4-ssec. Llanmai (Dowling) broke away between the five and the four and was timed to run his last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Smart Three Royal Estate (Marsh) was only allowed to run at speed in the straight. He left three furlongs behind brilliantly in 36 3-ssee. That’s That (Collins' led Boundless (Rudd) by half a length at the end of their half-mile in 51 l-ssec. It was a Hound gallop, for Boundless ws.s reluctant to move away and they were past the peg before gathering speed. Magician (N. Eastwood' and Apparel (C. McDonald) were to have run half a mile together, but they ended up running separately. Magician recorded 50 1-ftsec and Apparel, which chased him all the way, 49 2-ssec.

Bar Kochba (Sinclair) showed good speed to leave his half-mile behind in 49 4~ssec.

Idol Prince (Donovan) and Happy Venture (Williams) sprinted half a mile along the back in 51 2-ssec. ' Noble Rank (Donovan) and Lady York (A. H. Bastwood) kept together while running the Last four of five furlongs in 50 l-ssec. Crackers (N. Eastwood) took 51 l-ssec for half a mile and dashed over the last three furlongs in 37 l-ssec. Hy (Cairns' and Derailment (Cowles) were partnered in a run over six standard hurdles. Both were inclined to run about a bit, going into their fences, and Derailment got in close and rapped most of them. He had a “life” at the second flight. Hy made no serious mistakes.
