Arts Exhibition

Sir,—There was a very noticeable absence of professional artists’ work and presence at the annual exhibition of the Canterbury Society of Arts. I can only presume that there is some good reason. There are now one or two annual exhibitions when amateur and week-end painters’ work can be seen. If the society’s annual show is going to be increasingly almost entirely another view of amateur work, perhaps there could also be a more important show of only professional work. . They can, of course, have one-man shows, but many are engaged on commissions and probably have not time to fill one of those vast rooms annually.— Yours, etc., . LOUISE LEWIS.

April 9, 1963. [The president of the Canterbury Society of Arts (Mr P. Pascoe) said: “The Canterbury Society of Arts, under its articles of association, has honorary and working members. All working members are entitled to send in works for the annual autumn exhibition. The council selects the best paintings for display arid is not concerned with arbitrary divisions into professional and amateur painters.”]
