ALCOA OF AUST.
First Ingot Poured (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, April 17. Alcoa of Australia Pty., Ltd., today poured its first commercial ingot of aluminium at the new Point Henry smelter, near Geelong. The managing-director (Mr J. C. Smith) announced that the pouring of this ingot marked the beginning of actual metal production from the first 20.000-ton unit of the 40,000-ton smelter. As currently equipped, the plant can produce 20,000 tons of aluminium a year. Before the end of 1963, another 20,000-ton production unit will be completed, increasing the total capacity to 40,000 tons. £4sm Project
The Point Henry plant is part of a £4sm project begun m December. 1961, by Alcoa ot Australia Pty., Ltd., a company owned 51 per cent, by Aluminium Company of America and 49 per cent, by Australian partners. The Australian companies participating are Western Mining Corporation, Ltd., Broken Hill South, Ltd., and North Broken Hill, Ltd. Other aspects of the Alcoa project include the development of extensive bauxite deposits in the Darling Ranges near Perth, Western Australia, and a £lom alumina refinery at nearby Kwinana.
Moonie No. 14 Is Flowing (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SYDNEY, April 17. Union Kern Aog Moonie No. 14 well yesterday produced clean 45 gravity oil at a daily flow rate of 960 barrels during a three-hour production test, the Union Oil Development Corporation reported. The company conducted the tests through a half-inch choke.
