CARDIGAN BAY
Major Test On Saturday (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 16. The New Zealand champion, Cardigan Bay, will make trotting history if he wins the £5OOO Lord Mayor’s Cup from 48 yards at Harold Park on Saturday night. Caduceus, Avian Derby, Ribands, Uncle Joe and Captain Sandy have attempted the feat in recent years without success.
Cardigan Bay has raced 11 times in Australia for 10 wins. His only failure was when he fell in a heat of the 1963 Inter-Dominion Championship series at Adelaide in February. He has won races in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.
Cardigan Bay is unbeaten in four starts at Harold Park. At his first start there he won the £5OOO Summer Cup.
At his first start after winning the Inter-Dominion, Cardigan Bay won the Lady Brooks Invitatiton Cup at the Melbourne Showgrounds. Since then he has raced three 'times in Sydney for three wins. He won the lit furlongs Open Handicap from 36 yards last Thursday. The New Zealand champion has won 29 races and £38,980 15s in stake money.
