Summer Regent Wins First Leg At Ellerslie

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, April 15. Summer Regent, with his free galloping and a light weight, was too good for 19 opponents in the £2250 H. O. Nolan Handicap at Ellerslie today.

His speed had him in front With six furlongs to go and his stamina enabled him to stay there quite comfortably. The ground had been deadened by overnight showers. Summer Regent’s time for the mile and a half was 2:31. Summer Regent, a member of R. T. Cotter’s Te Rapa team, had not previously won in open company. In six attempts he only once finished out of the money, so he was due to win.

Fresh after a short spell out of hard training, Summer Regent went hard to the first bend and had his young apprentice rider all out to restrain him. He soon settled down, and for the last halfmile ran easily in front.

In the finish Summer Regent ran clear of Kumlucky (second) by two lengths and a half, with Clymon the same distance back third. Summer Regent was 4/6 in the win and place betting. Kumlucky, for his first try in open company, was the second favourite each way, and Clymon was 7/7. On Summer Regent the returns were £9 19s and £3 10s, and on the other two they were £2 12s 6d and £5 8s 6d. The disappointment was On Purpose, which did not come anywhere near expectations and finished ninth. Ravenwood was another which went disappointingly. BEAT FAVOURITE Nestlebrae. the rank outsider except for Black Saga thoroughly beat the hot favourite, Semprini, in the second teg of the T.A.B. double, the Royal Stakes. Semprini failed by more than a length to hold second. Nestlebrae, a three-year-old black gelding by Callander from Princess Hilda, won in the maiden clas< at Ellerslie during the spring out has been disappointing sin. e. In the Royal Stakes, well ridden by B. F. Andrews, Nestlebrae won decisively by half a length from the Otakl filly. Harvest Moon. He returned £34 18s 6d and £6 on the win and place and £462 14s for £1 in the double with Summer Regent. Nestlebrae has the look of a good galloper and his condition for the Royal Stakes did his trainer. F. G. Stowe, of Ellerslie. great credit. The attendance was 18,499, against 20.119 on the second day last year. The weather was overcast and the track good. FIRST AWAY Commodore Roberts. Woodlore, Dashing Star. Royton. and Glen Count were the first five to the course proper tn the H. O. Nolan Handicap. Summer Regent kept close on the outside. Fair Filou lost ground a little and Gullfax was slow. The pace was easy going to the mile. Elrey went ahead by a length. leading Summer Regent which had half a length on Woodlore, Glen Count and Commodore Roberts (wide). Near the six furlongs Summer Regent edged In f-ont of Elrey A length furth- back was Glen Count, j.. >t ahead of Sardis, Woodlore. Jim's Count, and Commodore Roberta. There was a short gap to Ravenwood. Dashing Star, Surging, and Fair Summer Regent led part the three furlongs. Elrey trailed with Glen Count. Sardis. Jim's Count and Fair Filou (Improving) came next. With a furlong to go Summer Regent was leading pretty clearly and he went on strongly to win by two lengths and a half. Kumlucky ended a battling run on the Inside in second place, clear of Clymon. which shaded Fair Filou for third.
