M? r s«XXl“i£ cUMification for “Bell of the Ball” overseas is large cactus and that it is not ciamified in New Zealand, yet he diequalified it in a giant semi-cactus class where he classified it as fimbriated. Mr Pollard never has and never will have the sole right to classify a dahlia. The New Zealand Dahlia Society has a classification executive to do this and has published a list for the guidance <rf horticultural societies and judges. It states that any dahlia not listed may be shown according to the size of the bloom on the day of the show, and Mr Pollard was obliged to judge accordingly. How did Mr Pollard dtaaeify the “Bell of the Ball" he exhibited as a medium cactus in the same show? My attention was drawn to this by the secretary at the New Zealand Dahlia Society, Who was in attendance at the disqualification.—Yours. etc., A. R. FREEMAN. March 28, 1983. [“Bell of the Ball” was not disqualified because of its size, but because of its type; M is a large fimbriated cactus, replies Mr Pollard. “I do not claim to have the sole right to olaaairfy any dahlia. As pointed out by Mr Freeman, this is the duty of the classification executive of the Dahlia Society of New Zealand. I am a member of this executive. When I disqualified ’Bell of the Ball* because I considered it was a fimbriated variety, I eaUed in Mr E. G. Collett. another member of this executive, who was judging another section ait the show for an opinion. He fully supported me, as since, have the other South Island members of the executive. As to how I classified the ‘Bell of the Ball’ I was supposed to have exhibited, this is just ridiculous as I did not exhibit a bloom of this variety in a national class ait this show, nor have I ever shown a ‘Bell of the Ball’ as other than what I consider it is;
