Recruits By Cable
The New Brighton Soccer Club has gained five new players—for the cost of one cablegram. When the club committee heard that the P. and O. liner Stratheden was due to arrive in New Zealand with a number of English emigrants on board, it was decided to send a recruiting cablegram to the ship It was received before the Stratheden arrived at Sydney, and for seven days the message remained on the shin’s notice board. It asked those people travelling to Christchurch and inter-
ested in playing soccer to join the New Brighton club. The result was that fiveplayers—R. Horne, R. Brown, K. Green, K. Wingate, and R. Smith—were recruited. At least two of the players are likely to play in the Christchurch senior competition this season. A club official, Mr B. Hennessy, said yesterday: “It was just one of those crazy ideas that come to you, but this one turned out to be anything but crazy. We will try it again, when the opportunity arises.”
