£68,819 Given To Save The Children Fund

About £68,819. an increase cf £11,675 on the previous year, was received by the Save the Children Fund last year. It was reported at the annual meeting of the Dominion council of the fund yesterday. The money came from donations and collections. The annual Rice Bowl Appeal produced £20.216. “It is very creditable that the expenditure was less than £300.” said Mr G. Collins, of Auckland. "We are runninig on less than a shoestring. There is less than one-third of a penny spent for every pound earned.”

A motion that the Rice Bowl Appeal money be applied for the benefit of children in need, with due regard to existing commitments in Greece, Morocco, Korea and Hong Kong, was passed unanimously. The proceeds from the previous Rice Bow! Appeal were given to Hong Kong and Korea. "As a consequence of this terrible winter, the children of Greece are badly in need of our help,” said Miss M. G. Havetear.

It was decided to give £lOOO to the New Zealand Freedom from Hunger Campaign.

Mrs M. B. Warren reported that the Rev. M. G. Sullivan, (ormer Dean of Christchurch, who organised the annual Christmas tree appeal in Christchurch Cathedral, started a similar appeal in his London parish of St Mary’s, Bryanston square, last Christmas. The tree was given by the New Zealand Government and proceeds were sent to Korea. "The Christmas tree in Christchurch Cathedral received 31 cases of toys, 43 cases of clothing, and 11 cases of books. They were sent to Korea,” said Mrs Warren.

“In the event of a major world tragedy, there should be machinery for the immediate creation of a disaster fund from the New Zealand Save the Children Fund,” said Dr. L. Richwtiite, of Auckland. "A public appeal as soon afte ra disaster as possible would bring in money from people who would not normally subscribe.” he said. Most delegates were in favour of a fund being established in London where it could be allocated more quickly. A motion that a disaster fund be established in New Zealand wes amended to one which said that in the event of a national disaster, a New Zealand-wide public appeal would be started immediately. Officers elected were:—President, Miss M. G. Havelaar (Christchurch); chairman, Mrs M. B. Warren (North Canterbury); secretary, Mrs G. M. Samson (North Canterbury); treasurer. Mr J. A. Gillies (Southland); publicity officer, Mr G. Collins (Auckland); sponsorship secretary, Mrs N. McKay (Auckland).
