Men Change Pleas

Appearing in the Supreme Court yesterday to change their pleas of not guilty to ones of guilty on charges of attempted rape, and aiding and abetting the commission of attempted rape, Richard Hugh Evans Tumataroa. aged 23, and Raymond Robert Evans, aged 21, both freezing workers, of Invercargill, were remanded in custody by Mr Justice Wilson for sentence on April 3. Tumataroa was charged with attempted rape, and Evans with aiding and abetting the commission of attempted rape, before Mr J. K. Patterson, S.M., in the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court on February 27-28. Both pleaded not guilty, and were committed tn the Supreme Court for trial. Yesterday, each changed his plea to one of guilty. Tumataroa was represented by Mr J. G. Hutchison, and Evans by Mr W. Gilroy. The offences stemmed from events at a party in Wicklon street, Invercargill, an 18 - year - old kdtohenmaid, employed at the Ocean Beach freezing works, complaining that she had been attacked by a group of young Maori men, and raped.
