Mr Algie Advises Lions: “Do What You Can—Often”

/New Zealana Press Association)

AUCKLAND, March 29. The Speaker of the House of Representatives (Mr Algie) said tonight that it was all very well depending on a central authority, but the danger lay in that degenerating into “passing the buck.” Mr Algie. addressing 600 members of Lions Internationa) and their wives at the opening of the third national convention of Lions clubs of -New Zealand in Auckland, said the Lions organisation was a great movement for the betterment of many people Once the responsibility of helping others lay in the hands of royalty and the nobility, but now it was in •he hands of the rank and file.

It was only through the masses that it was possible to achieve the results that were being obtained. At present New Zealand faced severe problems after the failure of Britain to enter the Common Market In his opinion, said Mr Algie, it would have been a wise move to enter.

Mr Algie said the United Nations was aware of the peril at the end of the road along which it was heading The time was drawing nearer when those with a lust for power would do their own fighting. He advised delegates not to overdo things, but to do what was in their power, and do it often The Mayor of Auckland <Mr D M Robinson) officially opened the convention. Other speakers were the president of the host club. Mr A. L. Aikin, of Auckland, the district governor, Mr R A Usmar. and an international director of the organisation Mr H M. Kirk, of Auckland In an impressive ceremony the flags of three nations New Zealand. Britain and the United States, were placed on the official platform Thev were carried by Miss Doreen Porter, Mrs Anne McClurg and Mrs J P Parker. The ceremony was accompanied by music representing all three nations. Among greetings read out was a message of best wishes from “the Lions Club of the South Pole.”
