Did Not Hear Aust. Called South Irian
(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) PORT MORESBY, March 29. The United Nations Administration in Hollandia .says it knows nothing about the use of the term “South Irian” for describing Australia in Radio West New Guinea broadcasts.
This follows reports in Australia that planters had said they had heard Papua-New Guinea described as “East Irian” and Australia as “South Irian” in . the broadcasts
The United Nations Temporary Executive Administration (U.N.T.E.A.) in West New Guinea, which supervises the radio system said “East Irian” had been used on one occasion in an Indo-
nesian-language broadcast. “East Irian" had been used geographically when reports from California and Moscow stated there had been an earthquake in “East New Guinea'' without specifying the territory U.NT.E.A. said “New Guinea" was used in Englishlanguage broadcasts. and “Irian Timur" in Indonesian news Indonesians always refer to West New Guinea as West Irian.
