SHOOTING SEASON

Opening Day May 4 The game-bird shooting Season in the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society’s district will open on May 4, the secretary (Mr B. J. C. Hay) announced yesterday. There will be two differences from last season. The day set for pegging claims (Easter Day, April 14) is a week nearer the start of the season than last year; and the general daily limit bag for duck has been reduced from 15 to 10. The date for pegging claims had to be put back because the licences would not be ready until about the second week in April, Mr Hay said. The limit daily combined bag of 10 for grey, shoveller, and mallard duck had one exception—it could be extended to 15 if the balance was composed entirely of mallard drakes. The season for duck and pukeko will run from May 4 to June 3. The limit daily bag is 10 each for grey and (female) mallard duck, five for shoveller duck, three for pukeko. and 15 for mallard drakes. The season for black swan, Canada geese, chukor, and Californian quaff will go from May 4 to July 31. There is no limit daily bag on any of these except the quaff, where the limit is 10. Shooting hours will be from 6.30 a.m. to 7 p.m., with special provision for night shooting of Canada geese in a restricted area of Lake Ellesmere (the same area as last year). Mr Bay said the society and the Internal Affairs Department were anxious to get details of the Canada geese shot in the special .season just ended. The co-operation of shooters was sought in returning the butts issued with the licences, and any bands from birds shot. The information was needed so that a decision could be made whether to hold a similar season next year. Mr A. E. Greensmith, of Dunedin, was elected president of the New Zealand Pottery and Ceramic Manufacturers’ Association at the association’s annual conference held at Hanrner Springs. Mr K. E. Seal, of Auckland, was elected president of (he New Zealand Heavy Clay Products Manufacturers’ Association.
