Red Cross Activities
Leeston.— Sixty-four new members had been enrolled during a membership drive, bringing the total number to 164, it was reported at the annual meeting of the Leeston Red Cross Sub-centre. Goods sent to the North Canterbury centre included 30 new and 100 used garments, blankets, and fruit and vegetables. Donations of money included £3O to the milk powder fund, £2 2s for books and records for New Zealand soldiers in Malaya, £lO for refugees in Tibet and £25 to the Persian earthquake fund. Officers elected were: President, Miss M. P"ooks; vice-president, Mesdames C. S. Russell and A. Millar; secretary, Mrs J. Langham; treasurer, Mrs W. H. Cochrane; liaison officers, Mcsdames E. H. Newman and S. Pearce; committee, Mesdames J. W. Harley, K. T. Palmer, D. C. McMillan, R. Tasker, H. Branthwaite, D. Lili jun., R. B. Coe and Miss E. Gardiner. The retiring president, Mrs J. W. Harley, was presented with a bouquet and thanked for her work over a two-year period. Southbridge.— A busy year was reported at the annual meeting of the Southbridge Red Cross Sub-centre, including the sending of 371 garments, shoulder wraps, bed socks, knee rugs and linen to the centre. Vegetables, books and magazines had also been sent. Donations had been made to Rannerdale, Burwood Hospital and to the Persian relief; garments and shoes had been sent to C.0.R.5.0., magazines to the mental hospital and 18 pairs of felt slippers to Hong Kong and the Cholmondeley Home. Officers elected were: President, Mrs A. C. Campbell; vice-president, Mesdames A. Stewart and G. M. Doyle; secretary and treasurer, Mrs E. M. Boal.
Kaituna.— All financial appeals made through the North Canterbury Red Cross Centre had been supported during the year by the Kaituna sub-centre, acording to a report to the annual meeting. Funds were raised by setting up luncheon stalls at local events, and holding a dance. Guest speaker at the meeting was Mrs J. K. Moloney, of Christchurch. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs S. E. Patten; vice-presidents, Mrs L. Cooper and Miss B. E. Coop; secretary-treasurer, Miss B. E. Coop; committee, Mesdames P. de Pass, H. Barrett, A. Gray, M. Marriot, I. Humphrey and M. Willis. Lyttelton. Many new members have been gained by the Lyttelton sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, according to a report at the annual meeting. The street day appeal had been successful, the report said, and £7O
had been sent to the North Canterbury Centre, to be used for general purposes. A cake stall was also conducted in August and from the proceeds, £2O went to the Persian earthquake relief fund. The usual donations went to the Christmas parcels fund for the elderly. The subcentre now has 90 financial members. Tbe following officers were elected: President, Mrs M. Banfield; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames J. Huston, J. Pryde, H. Loutitt, S. E. Buchanan, R. K. Duckworth; secretary-treasurer, Mrs O. Elder; committee, Mesdames J. Huston, J. Pryde, H. Loutitt, S. E. Buchanan, R. K. Duckworth, J. R. Preston, E. N. Donnelly, G. Voyce; auditor, Mr J. Thompson. Waipara.— Donations included £lO each to the North Canterbury Red Cross Centre’s Meals on Wheels service, Good Neighbour service and emergency fund, £lO to totally disabled servicemen, and £25 to the Persian earthquake relief appeal, it was reported at the annual meeting of the Waipara subcentre of ■ the Red Cross Society. The following officers were elected: President, Mrs B. Wyn-Williams; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames B. J. McMahon and F. J. Bain; secretary, Mrs B. Wyn-Williams; treasurer, Mrs H. Hawke; junior liaison officer, Mrs B. J. McMahon; committee. Mesdames G. L. McGuckin, R. B. Fincham. D. F. Quigley, T. Gabrielsen, H. Henderson, A. A. Thomson, and Mrs A. A. Thomson.
