UNHAPPY CREW

Will Not Pay Union Fees (Ng. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Mar. 28. Crew members aboard the troubled 4687-ton freighter Baron Garioch, berthed at Port Taranaki, are still dissatisfied with the situation aboard the ship in spite of a visit from a representative of the British National Union of Seamen today. However, the ship, which arrived at New Plymouth from Auckland last Sunday with a cargo of potash, is expected to sail for Makatea tomorrow as scheduled. The crew members were adamant that they would not pay union levies as a protest measure. It was emphasised that the food was not the major problem, but the relations between the captain and crew. A seaman tonUcht expressed the crew’s dissatisfaction with the visit of the union official, who had come from Wellington to look into the position. “The union man came aboard during the morning,” said the seaman. “After spending a little time with us he went up top where he discussed a couple of things with the captain. These will probably be fixed up, but they are nothing to do with the main troubles.”
