SAFETY BELT CAMPAIGN

Women Showed More Interest Women appeared to be more safety-conscious than men, said the district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D. L. Hogan) reporting on “safety belt week” at a meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee.

Women had displayed greater interest than men in the displays and the bulk of inquiries about belt fittings and types had come from women, he said.

He commended the efforts of the many firms who had spent considerable amounts of money, time and materials on displays, both in Cathedral square and in their own windows.

Weeks of research had gone into many displays, particularly those in which cars had been suspended from safety harness, he said. Many firms had detailed staff to demonstrate types of harnesses and ways of fitting it.

It was decided to write letters of appreciation to all who had participated in the campaign, and it was suggested that another campaign might profitably be held at the beginning of next summer.
