DRINKING HOURS

Liberals Want 10.30 Closing (NZ. Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 28. The Liberal Party favours 10.30 p.m. closing of bars, with no liquor to be served between 6 p.m. and 7.30 p_m., except in dining rooms. Mr E. L. May, the party’s chief executive officer, said at a political meeting atOamaru tonight: “We have a problem of drink in this country. We will not solve it by closing our eyes to it or trying to introduce restrictions that will only drive us back to the days of sly grog.” The only way to achieve “sensibility" and to improve conditions was to remove the “scrambles” between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Mr Blay said closing bars at 6 p.m. and reopening them from 7.30 p.m. till 10.30 pjn. would encourage men to go home for tea with their families, then give them the opportunity to visit a hotel to drink at leisure and in good conditions.
