WEEDICIDE COSTS

Counties Want Investigation “Fifteen per cent, is just playing with it,” said Mr A. A. Macfarlane, chairman of the Amuri County Council, when ward H of the Counties’ Association learnt that councils would be granted a 15 per cent, reduction in the cost of weedicides to be applied by council staffs. “It should be more like 50 or 60 per cent.,” said Mr Macfarlane. “Because of the seriousness of the weed problem, there should be a very serious investigation of the matter—even if it’s a matter of investigating the overseas supply and having the market opened up.” Mr C. McKenzie, the chairman, said there was a lot of pressure behind the matter all over the country because it was getting so serious. The meeting decided to ask the Government for an immediate investigation of the price of hormone weedkillers. On Mr Macfarlane’s suggestion it also decided to explore the availability of imports from overseas—particularly the Continent and Japan.
