ATHLETICS More Records Broken By Schools’ Runners

A further two records, both in the under-14 track events, were broken at the third and last preliminary meeting of the Christchurch secondary schools’ boys’ athletic sports, held at Rugby Park yesterday. This brought the total of new records set at the preliminary meetings to three, one of which was broken twice.

A blustery following wind in the sprint events surprisingly did not result in fast times. Overall, times were comparatively slow, although competition in many events was relatively close. The finals of all events will be held at Rugby Park on Saturday. An extremely close race is expected in the under-14 relay final. The standing record of 51.8 sec was broken by onetenth of a second by St. Bede’s College on Tuesday, and was again lowered by Shirley Boys’ High School. The record now stands at 51.4 sec.

N. W. Morris (Shirley Boys’ High School) clipped .3 of a second off the under-14 220 yards record, set last year by M. Perreau (Mairehau High School), with an exceptionally fast time of 25 6sec. Strong Finishes Perreau. now competing in the junior section, showed great potential He finished very strongly to win the junior 100 yards event in 11 sec, only 2 of a second outside the record. In the 220 yards race he won easily with another good time of 24.75ec. The record for this event stands at 24.45ec. As the last runner in the Mairehau School’s junior relay, he was instrumental in ensuring victory for the team with a fine finish. The open mile was am overwhelming triumph for the Christ’s College runner, D. A. Fisher His time of 4min 43.4 sec was not particularly fast compared with the record of 4min 25 6sec, but he had no competition in the closing stages, winning by more than 140 yards. Generally, the meeting was a success for Christ’s College and Shirley Boys’ High School In the open section. Christ’s College took seven firsts and four seconds while Shirley Boys’ High School took four firsts and five seconds. Shirley Boys’ High School won six events in the intermediate grade, and Christ’s College and Papanui High School won two each. The first three competitors in the mile, 880 yards and 100 yards events, and the first two in all other events, qualified for the finals. Abbreviations used in results are: Christ's College.
