RADIO AND TV SETS

Safety Standards Drawn Up Safety requirements for main-supplied radio and television sets are set out in a new standard specification issued by the New Zeal/hd Standards Institute.

“Experience has shown that in a complex piece of equipment like a radio or television receiver there are bound to be several components, such as electrolytic capacitors and valves, in which the possibility of an insulation failure cannot be considered completely negligible,” says the institute’s newsletter.

The specification lays down safety requirements for apparatus for radio and televisition reception and presentation, and for electronic sound-amplifying or reproduction systems. “Requirements for design, construction and electrical performance are specified only as far as is necessary to provide the highest practicable degree of safety in operation. The standard specification does not cover the design and performance of apparatus from the point of view of quality. “The safety requirements include protection of the user from electric shock and from flying glass from cathode ray tubes; and protection of the apparatus from damage by overheating or fire. Attention is also drawn to the possible danger to the health of the user from X-radiation from high-voltage equipment for example, from cathoderay tubes and from rectifiers.”
