CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
Action Against Royal Rodeo
(W^J’-A.-Reuter —Copyright) DARWIN, March 26. Legal action is to be taken over alleged cruelty to animals during a rodeo watched by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in Darwin. The secretary of the Northern Territory branch of the ILSJ’.C.A, Mrs S. Jenkinson, said today a solicitor bad been instructed to begin legal ection against the North Australia Show Society. Three steers used for riding in the rodeo died. Mrs Jenkinson said it would be alleged that the steers died from heat exhaustion as a result of negligence by the society in not providing adequate water and shade for them.
Mrs Jenkinson said she had •een the animals before the rodeo, and they had been in good condition. The Queen and Prince Philip watched steer-riding and buck-jumping events at the rodeo for about half an hour on March 18, during their three-day visit to Darwin. It was one of the hottest days Darwin has had this year.
