£250,000 Loan To
Open Soon A £250.000 loan for the North Canterbury Hospital Board’s building programme is to be opened on April 1. The loan will not be underwritten. The amount will include £40,600 at £5 2s 6d per cent., falling due on various dates up to April 1, 1968; £41,000 at £5 5s per cent., due on dates up to April 1, 1972; and the rest at £5 7s 6d, with due dates from April 1, 1973 onwards.
Hospital News In Brief
Eleven applications have been received by the North Canterbury Hospital Board for the position of medical superintendent - in - chief in place of Dr. T. Morton. Seven were from overseas and four from New Zealand, it was reported at a meeting of the board yesterday. The applications are to be considered by a special committee. "Health Matter.”—Miss M. B. Howard, M.P., suggested that, when a deputation from the board met the Drainage Board on the question of sewers, the problem of smells and midges at Aranui should be raised. “This is definitely a health matter,” Miss Howard said. The chairman of the works committee (Mr L. A. Bennett) said the proposal would be considered. Matron’s Retirement. A function was held last evening at the Kaikoura Hospital to say farewell to the retiring matron (Miss M. E. Briscoe). The board sent her its thanaks for her work.
Resignation. The board received with regret the resignation of the matron of Huntsbury Home (Miss M. E. Maxwell) as from May 31. Miss Maxwell has held the position since 1959. Hospital Tunnel.—Difficulties have arisen over the route of the proposed walking tunnel between the Christchurch Hospital and the manse site, the main point being its relation to a barrel drain which blocks the way. The Christchurch Drainage Board is to be asked if the drain can be rerouted.
Maternity Beds.—An "in eommitete” discussion was held on the results of the gynaecological and maternity section of the Health Department’s survey of the bed needs of Christchurch. Helpers Needed. The Friends at the Christchurch Hosopital needed extra helpers for the hospital creche as they were finding difficulty in maintaining the service-, the chairman (Dr. L. C. L. Averill) said.
