Wool Prices Steady To Firm At Napier Sale

(New Zealand Press Association)

NAPIER, March 27. Bidding was widespread and animated on the opening day of the Napier March wool sale today. Principal competition came from the Continent, with support from Bradford, the United States and Japan. Competition was particularly brisk on extra fine and fine crossbred fleece which was in sellers’ favour, but the

offering of these types was very limited, says the official report. Medium and coarse crossbred fleece and second-shear was firm on Auckland rates while bellies and pieces and well grown, good style lambs were a shade dearer, while average lambs were unchanged. Today’s offering of 26,636 bales, contained wools drawn from all parts of Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, East Coast and Taupo areas. They mainly comprised wet ewe fleece and the normal percentage of skirtings, with hogget fleece in small quantities. However, it was noticeable that there was an increasing quantity of short fleece wool or early shorn fleece showing in the catalogues due to the growing practise of double shearing. The supply of lambs was about normal for a sale at this period of the season. Fleece Wools Fleece wools were generally well grown and of a topmaking description, and although mainly rather heavy in condition and at times showing slight water stain or discolouration, were well up to standard. Oddments were largely faulted by water stain while lambs were a little disappointing as they appeared to lack their usual bloom as well as being a little short in staple length, a fault which is hard to understand in view of the very favourable growing season. Specialty lots were in short supply Range of Prices The following is the official range of prices: Southdown 58-60's
