LYTTELTON YOUTH
Judo Classes Supported The Lyttelton Judo Club opened on Tuesday evening, when about 40 boys and girls attended the first of the classes which are being conducted by Mr G. Cleland, an orange belt holder, who is a policeman in the port. With the assistance of Messrs T. Williams and A. Huxford. waterside workers, he agreed to begin the classes in an effort to combat the lack of entertainment and social gatherings for Lyttelton youths. Criticism by Cr. G. Adams of the lack of youth activities in the borough has prompted a group of teenage girls to approach a Lyttelton clergyman for his advice on a petition seeking Sunday afternoon dances. It also led to a statement yesterday by the women’s committee of the Lyttelton Marine Band which said that the “honours" had gone this week to a teenager from Sumner who had realised the need for providing an outlet for the energies of youth. "A project, even to twisting on a Sunday afternoon, is preferable to allowing youths to lounge around the streets in groups looking for mischief to get into, and what begins as fun and a laugh may well end in tragedy,” the woman’s statement says. It suggests that several teenage persons from reputable homes should be invited to a council meeting to give their views on the needs for entertainment and recreation.
