Overcrowded Trains

Sir,—l wish to complain of the lack of carriages on the 5.10 pm. train from Lyttelton to Christohurch daily. Often several passengers are compelled to stand in the carriages and the guards have a difficult job in clipping tickets. I have noticed up to 20 men standing in the guard’s van on this train and understand this is really against railway regulations. On Tuesday, March 19, there were at least 15 passengers standing in the carriage that I was travelling in. Surely the Railways Department could arrange to place extra carriages on this particular train and ensure that workers after a hard day’s toil are able to obtain a seat.—Yours, etC ” DISGRUNTLED PASSENGER.
