Men Trapped By River Two men were rescued from the rapidly rising Rakaia river yesterday by a jet boat. The men. whose names are not known, were on a tractor about 100 yards from the bank of the river A third man swam to safely

Mr A. Thomson, a Rakaia car painter, said that about 7 p.m. a man came to his house and told him some men were trapped in the river about a mile away on the coastal side of the Rakaia bridge. Mr Thomson quickly put out in his 16ft jet boat and soon arrived at the tractor By this time only the vehicle's exhaust and air filter were showing above water. Two men were clinging to the tractor, the third having already swum ashore. The two men quickly got into the boat and were taken ashore. “Another hour out there and I would not like to be in their shoes.” said Mr Thomson. He said the river must have risen very rapidly to have trapped the men.
