DEFENCE VOTE

Mr Holyoake Non-Committal (N2. Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 26. The Prime Minister (Mr H lyoake) said tonight he could not yet say whether there would be a change this year in the proportion of money voted for defence. He said he did not know yet what the Government's total expenditure would be. Mr Holyoake was asked if remarks by the Minister of Defence (Mr Eyre) that insufficient money was going to defence reflected Government policy. “I don’t think this differs from any other statement the Minister has made in the past,” Mr Holyoake replied. “I know of no country in the world without a considerable body of opinion maintaining that insufficient money is spent on defence. “This even applies in the United States, which spends prodigious sums.”
