FIORDLAND ROAD
Govt. Decision Welcomed (NX. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Mar. 19 The Government’s decision to build a road from Lake Manapouri to Doubtful Sound to aid the construction of its giant hydro-elec-tric scheme there will have the Tourist Department ’’rubbing its hands with delight,” said the manager of the Invercargill bureau. Mr J. R Stone, this morning.
Work will start in a fortnight building a track for utility vehicles along the route of the 11-mile track from the lake over the Wilmot pass to the sound. It is more than likely that before the £32 million hydro-scheme is completed by 1968 the track will be developed into a road that can carry tourist buses Mr Stone said the road would be the tourist keystone to the whole Fiordland area. Doubtful Sound itself, with a hundred miles of waterways was a wonderful tourist attraction but the bulk of tourists could not or would not walk there, as they had to do at present "This could be one of New Zealand's best attractions with a boat trip up Manapouri and a bus ride over the pass to the sound.” be said.
