MOTORWAY ROUTE
Second Petition Organised The petition organised by Mr H. J. Walker. MJ*-, against the proposed route of the north motorway from Bealey avenue to the city boundary, had met with such a big response that a supplementary petition was being organised. Mr G. Johnstone. National Party organiser for St. Albans, said yesterday. Mr Walker was in Soutosast Asia and so was unable to continue work on the petition, Mr Johnstone said. Mr Walker had therefore asked his constituency supporters to take over—not because it was in the interest solely of the National Party, but because the party organisation was to hand and the matter was urgent as objections had to be in by the end of the month.
The first petition had been taken only to those actually in the line of the proposed motorway, but many others whose properties were near the route or likely to be affected by its clover leafs and other junctions were also asking to sign. The supplementary petition had therefore been opened. It would be available for signing In the National Party headquarters until March 29. and would also be taken round the whole area by voluntary workers.
The original petition, with 240 signatures, was presented to the Mayor (Mr G. Manning) on Monday, and will go before the City Council ‘his evening.
