N.Z. Man’s Work On B.B.C.

Essay for Orchestra, the prize-winning work of ta New Zealand composer Barry Moss, received its first performance’ recently on the General Overseas Service of ■the BBC.
The work, which was recorded in Manchester just before Christmas, was presented by the BBC Northern Orchestra conducted by another New Zealander, Robert Philpot, of Auckland, who was at one time assist-ant-conductor .with the Bournemouth' Symphony Orchestra.
Mr Moes, from Wellington has been in England since ,1950. in which year he won a Goring Thomas Scholarship for composition to the Royal Academy of Music. His Essay for Orchestra, the score of which will tartly be sent to New Zealand, won him ta Royal Philhairoonic
Society’s prize in 1958. Five yean earlier he had won the same award for his Variations ter OchestM.
