BIG STRIPED MARLIN
Heaviest This Season (N.Z. Press Association) WHANGAREI, February 25. The heaviest striped marlin caught in New Zealand .waters this season was landed near Tutukaka yesterday after a 45-minute fight. The 378-pound marlin takes tho lead in the Whangarei Deep Sea Anglers’ Club marlin stakes and in the national competition for the Lord Norrie Gold Cup. It was caught by J. F. Clarke, of Hamilton. It was his first success in nine seasons. The heaviest game fish caught in Northland waters this season was a 607-pound make shark, taken from the Whangaroa fishing grounds today by F. L. Smith, of Blenheim. A foul-hooked 311-pound striped marlin towed a charter boat 14 miles out to sea from the Bay of Islands. The struggle lasted nearly three hours.
