Governor’s First Visit To University
The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) will make his first call as official visitor to the University of Canterbury, on Friday, March 22, at 8.15 pun. There will be an academic procession into the hall for a meeting of the university community. Science Ceremony. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) will lay the foundation stone for the new school of science at Ham on the afternoon of Thursday, April 4.
Graduation Address.—Mr Justice Haslam, a distinguished graduate of the University of Canterbury and a former Rhodes Scholar, will give the graduation address in May.
Percival Laboratory.—Many members of the university council will go to Kaikoura on Saturday, March 9, for the official opening of the Edward Percival Marine Laboratory. This new field station of the zoology department commemorates its former head.
Degrees Conferred.—The university yesterday conferred the following degrees: Bachelor of science and bachelor of engineering (chemical). Jan Lpdewijk Maria Roborgh; Bachelor of laws, Michale John Trebilcock; Bachelor of commerce, Timothy Michael Herrick. Doctorate Awarded.—Mr N. A. F. Smith, a lecturer in civil engineering, has been awarded a doctorate of philosophy of Bristol University.
Botanical Congress.—Professor W. R. Philipson, head of the university’s botany de-
partment, has been invited to take a leading part in the tenth International Botanical Congress in Edinburgh next year. He will preside over a symposium on evolution and relationship and speak on growth and age.
Computer Busy.—The Canterbury University computer has sometimes been in use almost 24 hours a day. Over the last three months its operation ha* risen to 84 hours a week on a huge range of problems in physics, chemistry, geology, geography, and electrical, civil aud chemical engineering.
Congratulations. Emeritus Professor G. Joberns was congratulated on the award of the C.B.E. in the New Year Honours. “Whither University?"—A combined meeting of the university co'incil and of the professorial board, possibly with others attending, will be held on Wednesday, March 6, at 7.45 p.m. for a general discussion on! "Whither the University of Canterbury.**
