Confusion Over Te Aroha Results

"The Press" Special Service

AUCKLAND. Feb. M. In a packed finish from watch everyone, including the judge, had gome difficulty in picking the first three, Gitano won the CUM Herries Memorial Handicap by a neck at Te Aroha yesterday. Nett Price ran second and Khorazami was the closest of thirds. only Inches ahead of Commodore Roberts (fourth).

From the grandstand, a few yards short of the finishing post. Gitano looked the winner clearly enough, but there was no saying which came second, third and fourth. The judge. Mr H. P. Clarkin. named Gitano. Khorazami On Purpose, and Commodore Roberts in that order as the horses required to weigh-in. After looking, at a photo he placed Gitano first. On Purpose second. Khorazami third, and Commodore Roberts fourth.

Both the riders of On Purpose fD. J. Wyatt) and Nett Price (Ft. Fisher) had other ideas of the race’s outcome. Fisher, certain that his mount was in the money, asked officials if he might go to scale, but was refused permission.

A suggestion was then made to Mr Clarkin that perhaps Nett Price should be in the placings instead of On Purpose A further photo was called for. and the totalisator was told to hold up the payout of dividends. Some minutes afterwards the final placing* were announced as Gitano first. Nett Price second, and Khorazami third.

A report from the judicial committee said that the stewards, acting under rule 205 M of the Rules of Racing, allowed the placing of Nett Price, even though hla rider did not weigh In. The rule Is the one which allows the stewards to deal with any matter not provided for otherwise. Results:—
