Royal Flemington N.Z.-Bred Outsider Wins Queen’s Cup

(N.Z. Prut Association —Copyright) MELBOURNE, February 24. The New Zealand-bred stayer, Aladdin’s Lamp (20/1), trained in South Australia by C. S. Hayes for .three of Australia’s pro- ■ fessional golfers, won the £5OOO Queen’s Cup at the Flemington Royal meeting yesterday.

AH three golfer*, P. Thomson, K. Nagle, and N. von Nida, were playing in the Singapore open golf tournament, and the trophy was presented by the Queen to. Thomson’s wife, Mrs M. Thomson.

The Queen said to Mrs Thomson: “This must be a new experience for you to get a cup instead of your husband.”

Aladdin’s Lamp, which came from a long way back in the field in the early stages, ran on strongly to beat Rio David by half a length. River Seine took third place by half a head. The New Zealand-bred galloper, Alpensea, ridden by G. Moore, started favourite at 11/4, and .had the run of the race.

Alpensea hit the front with a furlong to go, but could not sustain the effort.

Moore rode him hard, but Alpensea could finish only fifth, with the New Zealand stayer, Conference, separating him from the placed horses.

Although Alpensea is still favourite for the Australian Cup, he has been joined on the top line by Aladdin’s Lamp and River Seine. Aladdin’s Lamp is raced on lease by the golfing partners, and is owned by Mr and Mrs L. Maxsmith, of New South Wales.

'Mrs Maxsmith is a daughter of Aladdin’* Lamp’s breeder, Mr W. R. Stead, of

the famous Sasanof Stud at Hastings in New Zealand. A five-year-old gelding, Aladdin’s Lamp was earlier trained in Sydney by M. McCarten.

When ■ he broke down in the off fore tendon, he was sent to Hayes in Adelaide for the facilities which are available at Semaphore beach near his training quarters. The win was Aladdin’s Lamp’s first success since January 24, 1962, when he won the Canterbury Wednesday Handicap. Record Win The champion Sydney mare, Wenona Girl broke the race record in winning the Lightning Stakes. Wenona Girl (4/1) dashed to the lead two furlongs from home and went on to defeat Proud Miss (12/1) by threequarters of a length. The 10/9 on favourite, Sky High, was a length and a quarter away, third. Wenona Girl’s time was 58 3-10 sec was ataiost half a second faster than the previous best of 58jsec established by the two-year-old, Ritmar, in winning the race in 1959. Wenona Girl’s time was only one-twentieth of a second outside the Flemington fivefurlong record of 58*4 second held by All Love and Tirage. It was Wenona Girl’s nineteenth win. The prizemoney of £2030 increased her winnings to £44,235. The trainer. J. Green, was not greatly disappointed by the failure of the odds-on favourite Sky High. Green said he had been getting Sky High ready for a mile race and then changed the programme. Wenona Girl is likely to be withdrawn from the Oakleigh Plate. Her next start will be in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield on March 9. The jockey, J. Johnson, was pleased with Proud Miss’s performance as a trial for the Oakleigh Plate and Newmarket Handicap. Proud Miss, which carried 8-4 today, drops to 8-1 in the Oakleigh Plate and 8-4 in the Newmarket. Easy for Aquanita The champion West Australian stayer, Aquanita, made light work of the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes. Aquanita (5/2 on favourite) raced away in the last furlong to beat Woambra (33/1) by three lengths. Goglio (50/1) was half a length away third. The Sydney four-year-old, Kilshery, which started second favourite at 11/2, finished sixth.

Aquanita has now had 66 starts for 28 wins, 10 seconds and nine thirds. His winnings (£59,593) place him second on the list of Australian horses now racing, and he is in twelfth place on the Australian all-time list of winners. It is probable his next race will be' in the St George Stakes at Caulfleld next Saturday. Contador, in the Windsor Steeplechase, and Happy Fire, in the Elms Handicap, made a total with Aladdin’s Lamp of three New Zealand-bred winners in the six-race Royal programme.

Contador lumped his big weight (12-7) with great dash and stamina over the 16 fences.

He caught Kamal * few yards beyond the furlong post and drew away to beat him by a length and a half with the 100/1 chance. Sir Cameron, third. * Contador ran the distance in 3min 48isec —only 2sec outside Tranquil Glow’s course record. Details:— QUEEN’S CUP, £5009; 14m. ALADDIN’S LAMP (Targul— Dividend) 7-9 J.
