Water-Ski-ing Canterbury Championships Held At Lakeside

A brisk easterly wind marred the water sports display yesterday afternoon at the Lakeside Domain on the water skl-lng area of Lake Ellesmere. The display was the climax of the Canterbury regional water ski-ing championships which were held on Saturday.

The attendance was one of the biggest at a Canterbury water sports meeting. The wind produced a chop on the water which prevented some of the more complex tricks, and the jump was concentrated on. One. notable exception, however, was a fine display of barefoot ski-ing by P Reeve, who skied tor about 100 yards on his feet and was hidden for the whole time in a cloud of spray thrown up from the broken water. ’

Shortly before the display Vaughan Bullivant, a junior, skier, injured a shoulder landing from the jump and this put paid to the planned six-man pyramid, as he was to have been the top man. Since last year there has been a big improvement in the facilities for competitors, boats, and spectators on the lake edge at the domain, and these will be improved further for the New Zealand water ski-ing championships to be held there next year. Championships Held on the Ellesmere Aquatic Club's ski-ing area, the championships on Saturday were under the auspices of the Canterbury Regional Water Ski Association, and the host club was the Clearwater Aquatic Club, which has its headquarters at Lake Camp. There were 81 entries in the slalom. 31 in the jump, and 28 in the tricks.

With the water in good skiing condition until mid-after-noon there were some *fine performances in the tricks section. In this the competitor has to nominate a series of tricks which are allotted points eccording to their difficulty. W Shaw, who won the senior men's class was awarded the highest points for the day. Towed at fully 30 miles en hour by J. Mclntyre's ChevyMill, the jumpers increased their speed as they approached the ramp by double cutting, and the increased width of the ramp enabled the distances jumped to’ be Increased considerably

W. Flewellyn made three jumps of 75ft, 79ft and 814 ft to win the men's event In the men's jump D. J. Alaop jumped 711 ft in his second run after falling in bls first attempt and B. Johnson jumped 664 ft. Mies F. Willetts won the women’s jump svtth 49)ft The slalom events attracted the biggest entries but the standard of some events was affected by the late-efternoon weather which caused a fair amount of chop. Cutting hard around buoys and crossing the wake of the towing boat the competitors put on a fine show. Miss Willetts again won her class, and was unbeaten for the day in all three sections of tricks, slalom and. jump. to the following results the following abbreviation* are used: Christchurch Water Sports
