20 DROWNED IN JANUARY
Comment On Ages (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 24. Twenty people were drowned in New. Zealand in January. according to the monthly survey issued by the National Water Safety Committee. Drownings in January last year numbered 19. There were five drownings last month in the 5-10 age group, but only one of a child under five.
“This is part of the usual seasonal pattern,” said the secretary of the committee (Mrs S. V. Higgins). “Children aged between five and 10 usually know enough to keep away from water hazards around their homes, but are unable to look after themselves when bathing. They are more likely to drown in the summer than they are in the winter. Infants, on the other hand, tend to drown in water hazards near their homes. “Evidence indicates that the children drowned last month would not have been drowned if they had been supervised when bathing or playing near water, or had been equipped with a lifejacket,” Mr Higgins said.
