ATHLETICS G. Grant Sets New Hammer Record

The inter-dub athletic meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday was a fairly casual affair. With the provincial titles just finished and the national championships only a week away, athletes in most cases were not anxious to over-exert themselves.

There were exceptions, of course, and one of these was the junior hammer thrower, G. Grant, who threw 178 ft 6} in for a new Canterbury record. This throw was only IJin short of the national record.

Miss C. Lightfoot was another who did well with a distance of 100 ft 8} in in the women’s under-17 javelin throw. Ulis was Bjin better than the standard for the event. The new distance will now become the record Miss V. Gilmour, who has been most consistent this season bettered her own record of 17ft lin in the women’s under-15 long jump by the narrow but successful margin of jin. The senior men’s half-mile champion, G. Hack, was given some valuable assistance by G. Poidevin in the 880 yards, but Poidevin’s first lap of 57sec was not good enough for Hack to produce a fast time, as was apparently intended. Hack came through about 300 yards from the tape, but he looked tired as he won in Imin 57.1 sec. D. Mackenzie, who ran the 100 yards in 9.9 sec earlier this week, won his section of the 75 yards in Bsec and the 220 yards in 22.8 sec, a very good time in the conditions.

R. Tait and R. Ball clashed in the senior men’s discus and although Tait won with 156 ft sjin, Ball was not far behind with 149 ft lOJin. C. McFadden ran a particularly fine race in the men's under-17 mile, winning convincingly in 4min 33.8 sec.
