Compulsory Unionism
Sir,—As a student of the industrial and political movement of New Zealand since 1906, and previously in South Africa from 1898, I claim to have a balanced knowledge of any acts of compulsion. I take this opportunity of congratulating the Federation of Labour on its achievement, and conclude by these remarks. Has any businessman or Government ever known good results being achieved from any person being compelled to do anything against his or her conscience? I have expounded my views on this matter in many places many times, and would not care to repeat what I have been called. May I refer to the “old brigade" of the 1913 maritime disruption, Messrs Brindle, Parry, Webb, Howard, Armstrong. and many others too numerous to mention, persons I was personally in contact with. Was that brought about by compulsory unionism? Yours, etc, HERBERT E. BARNSLEY. February 20, IMB.
