MEAT BOARD FELLOWSHIPS
Two Scientists Named (N.Z. Preu Association)
WELLINGTON, Feb. 20. The Meat Producers’ Board has announced the award of the first Sir Walter Mulholland Fellowships to Mr L G. Andrew, of the plant chemistry division, D.5.1.R., Palmerston North, and Mr J. A. Gardner, of Wallaceville Animal Research Station. Each has an M.Sc. degree with honours.
The board established these fellowships, administered by the University Grants Committee, to encourage graduates to enter fields of research of particular interest to the agricultural and food processing industries. They are intended to provide for advanced studies or research in bio-chemistry, animal physiology and genetics, and economics.
The fellowships will provide for up to three years' post-graduate study or research at overseas institutions.
They are named in honour of Sir Walter Mulholland, who lives at Darfield. He was for many years a member of the board. His service to the farming community and country generally extends over more than 50 years. Mr Andrew studied at the University of Wellington and Mr Gardner at Otago University. They both propose to do biochemical research: Mr Andrew at a United Kingdom university, and Mr Gardner at the Harvard Medical School in the United States.
