CRICKET Rain Robs Test XI Of Valuable Practice

(Neto Zealand Press Assoriation)

NEW PLYMOUTH. February 20.

The New Zealand cricket team for the first test was prevented from gaining further batting practice when rain allowed only 110 minutes’ play on the third day of the match against Central Districts at New Plymouth today.

In that time Central Districts aded 71 runs to its overnight total and lost one wicket for a lead of 226 with five wickets in hand.

It was expected that the Central captain, L A. Colquhoun, would declare about lunch time or a little after, but he was robbed of the chance. ■Hie Central Districts allrounder. B. W. Yuille, was again the dominating player •'■day. He scored 43 excellent runs before rain stopped play and thus completed a r /table double for the match. He wm the star of the Central bowling, taking seven wickets for 51 runs, and ended the game with 67 runs from the bat Survived Hat-trick Yuile had no difficulty in surviving J. R. Reid’s attempt at a haA-trick and then went cm to score with some delightful driving and powerful hooks.

He and the overnight not out batsman, W. T. Murdock, took the score along easily from 80 to 140 before Murdock played over a straight ball from R. Mote.

Murdock had batted well, playing Reid competently. He again showed that he has the temperament for ftrstclasg cricket, even though his running between the wickets left something to be desired Yuile continued to dominate the innings after G. A. Bartlett came in, and in spite at the light drizzle, these two took the score to 160 before play was stopped. Yuile, who.hit six fours, was 43 not out. His second innings was better than his first knock and at no stage did he appear in trouble. Except for Motz and to a lesser extent Reid, the New Zealand attack was not too impressive. Motz worked up to a good pace and bowled quite accurately.

Cameron, however, once again failed to give his admirero much confidence for the fray ahead. He was too easily hit hy Yuile and Murdock, while Bartlett was in no trouble facing him..
