ADDINGTON MARKET Demand For Older Ewes Remains Sound

Older ewes were yarded in their largest numbers this season at Addington market > yesterday, but they were still in good demand at rates fully firm on last week’s sale to possibly a shade better. Some good sheep were included in the yarding, and sales of aged ewes carrying a heavy fleece were made at up to 695.

Two-tooth ewes maintained about late good rates though they did not bring the premium that has been paid at the opening ewe fairs. Romneys fetched to 88s and fine wools to 80s.

Lambs were yarded in smaller numbers again, but competition was reduced, and apart from the best, they tended to be easier. Chatham Islands sheep were forwarded in all sections and sold well.

The entry totalled 24,509 head compared with 22,373 last week, and included 6341 store lambs (7657 last week), 4880 two-tooth ewes (5487), 12,61? older ewes (9132), and 671 wethers (187). STORE LAMBS With the exception of the top pens the store lamb market tended to be easier, and throughout the sale there was less competition from a smaller gallery. The entry was about 1000 less than last week, and quality was not as good. There were more small and plain sorts. The feature of the market was a consignment of shorn wether lambs from the Chatham Islands which sold up to 48s. They were big, well-grown lambs and carried good pelts. Competition on these lambs was quite keen, and they fetched their usual premium. For the rest at the offering the best forward wether lambs sold at about late rates, although the market was not as buoyant as last week, but on the lighter and medium condition lambs values, taking quality into account, looked a shade weaker. The Chatham Islands sheep, which were from A. Daymond, sold at 475, 45s 6d and 41s 6d for the 220 shorn Southdown cross, and at 48s, 45s 6d, and 41s for the 366 shorn Romneys. In the market generally Romney and Romney cross wether lambs sold at 33s 6d to 39s for average to good quality, best Down cross made 41s 6d to 46s 6d, with good at 35s to 39s and others at 25s to 32s 6d: best fine-wools realised 40s 6d to 445, with good at 34s to 395, and others at 24s to 30s fid. Good shorn fine-wools made to 36s 6d, with others at 22s to 30s, and the best shorn Romneys sold at 37 s to 40s, with good at 33s 6d to 355. Miss A. Welsh (Tai Tapu) sold 60 Down cross at 46s 6d and 92 at 445, and the latter price was also paid for seven from J. L. Lewis (Summerhill). S.R.M. Farm (Waikuku) sold 84 Border Leicester-Merino cross at 445, and Corriedales from E. Chlsnall (Scargill) realised 43s 6d. A few more ewe lambs were penned this week, but quality was. with few exceptions, only average. Values were about in line with those paid last week for the better sorts, but the plainer lambs looked to be fractionally easier. The best Romney ewe lambs sold at 63s and 535, for pens offered on account of an undisclosed Dunedin vendor. The best fine-wools made 48s to 49s 6d. which for a line of 207 halfbreds from Alan T. TWO-TOOTH EWES There was another sound market for two-tooth ewes, with the entry of similar size to last week. Some excellent pens of sheep were again yarded, but most were in the average to good category. A large gallery followed the sale The sale opened with the offering of some top quality sheep. and saw fine wools making to 80s and Romneys to 88s. Later the sale moved on to more of the average to good sheep. Although there was not the premium that has been paid at the opening ewe fairs at Ashburton and Amberley, the market could be described as on a par with last week's sale. The best of the Romnevs were making from 84a to 88s. with good at 70s to 795. average at 60s to 68s. and others at 46s to Rte. Chathams Romneys in the selection brought from about 50s to 82'.
