ICEBREAKER DIVERTED
Sick Australian On Supply Ship
The United States Navy icebreaker Glacier has been diverted from McMurdo Sound to pick up a doctor from the icebreaker Edisto near Cape Hallett and meet the Nella Dan, which has a sick Australian on board. The Nella Dan is a Danish ship specially strengthened for Antarctic operations. She has been chartered to resupply the Australian Antarctic Mawsan and Davis stations and is now in the Davis Sea near the main Russian base, Mirny.. The Glacier, which carries no doctor, left Lyttelton on Monday on her last trip to McMurdo Sound and is about half-way to her destination. The Edisto has been on ocean station in the Ross Sea, near Cape Hallett taking oceanographic readings. A request for assistance was received ait the United States advance Antarctic headquarters at Harewood last night from the Antarctic Division of the Department of External Affairs through the United States Naval Attache in Canberra. No information was given about the condition of the Australian on the Nella Dan.
