ROYAL TOUR Adelaide Heat Forces Change To Closed Car

ADELAIDE, February 20. Thirty-two police lancers on well-drilled grey thoroughbreds escorted the Queen dnd the Duke of Edinburgh on a spectacular drive through Adelaide in scorching sunshine today. Crowds estimated at nearly 200,000 turned out on the public holiday to greet the Royal couple, who drove 14 miles in an open Rolls-Royce in 90-degree heat.

On the drive back to the Britannia this morning, the Queen and the Duke decided to change from an open to a closed car for the last six miles because of the heat.

The Queen was doubtless remembering how sunburned she because during a similar drive in Auckland two weeks ago. The humid heat brought

flies with it and during the day the Queen constantly had to wave them from her face. Adelaide's wide streets were gaily bedecked with flags and at the town hall, where the Queen was officially welcomed to the city, a wide red carpet was spread right out into the street.

Crowds lining the Royal route, like those on the New Zealand tour, were happy but subdued, waving flags and clapping but not often cheering. The Queen and the Duke stood in the car much of the time, smiling and waving to the crowds.

The Queen wore a simple dress with printed design in shades of aquamarine blue A toning, wide Breton hat kept the sun off her face and shoulders.

The Royal progress started from the Royal yacht, Britannia, at Port Adelaide, and included a rectangular drive through the city with stops at South Australia's National Gallery.

The Queen impressed gallery officials with her ability to recognise works of Australian artists whose works she saw at an exhibition of Australian art In the State Gallery, London, late last month.

The Royal couple were shown a specially-arranged exhibition of Australian art for 45 minutes, escorted by the gallery director, Mr Robert Campbell, and the chairman of the gallery board, Sir Lloyd Dumas.

After lunch aboard the Britannia, the Queen and the Duke attended a Royal garden party in Adelaide's botanic gardens, to which 8000 guests had been invited.

Tonight at least 30.000 were expected to watch the Queen's arrival by Royal barge at floodlit Elder Park for an outdoor concert of the Adelaide music festival, with a choir of 1500 singing. Huge crowds at the garden party pressed to get a glimpse of the Queen and Duke, causing concern to police and member* of the Royal party. Guests left a narrow 3ft grassy apace for the Royal party to walk round the edge of a lily pond at one stage. The Queen wore a dress and coat of mimosa yellow tulle with a hat of yellow tulle and white camellia*.

The Duke was left a long way behind the Queen a* he walked along slowly, chatting with guests. The couple were behind ■ schedule in leaving Government House for dinner.

A selection of Australian wines was taken to the Britannia this morning a* a gift to the Queen. The wines were selected and given by th* Federated Wine and Brandy Producers’ Council of Australia. Seven South Australian wine judges made a preliminary selection of 76 bottles of various wines recently and made their recommendations to the final selection committee.
