NEW, SLIM BRITANNIA
Teen-Ager On £5 Note (N.Z.P^.-Reuttr—Copyright) LONDON, February 20. Britannia, the plump female figure symbolising Britain, is getting younger every day.
Her latest picture, on the reverse side of a new £5 note to be issued today, is a vastly different person from the Greek-robed warrior woman who ruled the wtves at the height of the British Empire. Gone are the helmet, the trident, the ramrod-straight back, the capacious bosom and stern appearance which appear on the penny, the pound note and old "fivers." Instead there is a modest young maiden, scarcely more than 14. with long flowing hair and looking rather unsure of herself—like the beauty queen at a village fete. The trident has become a negligently-held spear and instead of a shield, as in the penny, the new Britannia is holding aloft a palm branch: On the other side of the note is a new picture of the Queen This is similar to that on current notes, but shows an almost full face, with eyes to the front. The new note, smaller than the existing one. is the first to bear the signature of the new chief cashier of the Bank of England, Mr J. Q Hollom.
