CITY ELEPHANT RACE

Final Run-Off May

Be Needed

The Christchurch Junior Chamber's president, Mr H. F. Royds. is the first of the entrants for the elephant race next Friday to enlist supporters, appointing Messrs B. Pidgeon as trainer and I. Wilson as manager. His organisation, one of several taking part in the pr 'ude to a big charity fundraising project, has given him a schedule for next week. It includes reading “Gunga Dun," a familiarisation visit to the Ct terbury Museum, hire of ladder, a training run and a meeting with his mount, Jean. There are seven starters for the race, but it appears that a grand final may have to be run, for the Christchurch Round Table, which is joining other service clubs in the appeal for the new Salvation Army men’s home, wants representation. If it is given an eighth elephant it must be a mere five-year-old weighing only half a ton. Tentative plans are for the winner of the big race to compete in a final against the Round Table’s elephant, which would be one of the alsostarteds. The Round Table has selected Mr D. A. Ambler, a vice-chairman, as its rider.
