TRAFFIC STUDY IN N.Z.

Samoan Police Inspector

Much useful information on New Zealand’s traffic laws and operations will be taken back to Western Samoa for possible adoption by the traffic branch of the Police Force there.

In Christchurch yesterday. Sub-Inspector A. Young, who is the officer in charge of the traffic section of the Western Samoan Police Force, said although the American transport rules were in operation in his country, some of the Dominion's methods of control could probably be adapted tor use. Since Samoa became selfgoverning. many of its officers in various departments had been overseas studying other ways and methods of doing things. Even though there were no real traffic problems in Western Samoa the Police Department considered it useful to broaden its limited experience by studying other methods. His visit to the Dominion, said Mr Young, was part of a Government - sponsored programme.

He is now coming to the end of a four-month tour during which be has visited many centres studying all aspects of traffic control and administration.

After visiting the West Coast he has spent the last week with the Transport Department and Christchurch City Council's traffic department.

Mr Young said he believed the Superintendent of the Western Samoan Police Force (Mr A. L. PhUlipps) an American, will shortly visit the Dominion on a sixweek traffic study tour. On Monday, Mr Young will leave Christchurch for Dunedin where he will repeat on-the-spot training with the Dunedin City Council’s traffic department.
