CONTROL OF FISHERIES
Society Defers Discussion
Decision on a recommendation from the fish committee that representations be made to have control of freshwater fisheries vested in the Department of Internal Affairs was deferred at a meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society after members had failed to agree. Control of fisheries by two departments was ridiculous. It hampered efficiency in the government of the fisheries as co-operation was not always good, said Mr D. E. Ames.
The Wildlife Division of the Internal Affairs Department was nearly always the “nigger in the woodpile" said Mr J. E. Foote. Seldom did the division fully co-operate with the acclimatisation society, he said.
Mr Ames disagreed with this statement. He generally found the Marine Department less co-operative, he said, as it tended to work more in the interests of commercial fishermen.
“It would be a bad thing to have only one department in complete control of the fisheries. We should support neither faction,” said Mr Mugford. The matter was held over to the next meeting.
