TO AND FROM ANTARCTIC
There will be three Antarctic vessels at Lyttelton this week-end. They will be the icebreaker, U.S.S. Glacier, which will call here briefly to bunker on Saturday on her way from Wellington to McMurdo Sound. The Glacier’s damaged propeller has been replaced and a shaft repaired at Wellington. Due also the same day, but from McMurdo Sound, the supply tanker Chattahoochee is expected to load another petroleum cargo for Antarcttca and return south. The supply tanker Tombigbee, now on a courtesy visit to Nelson, will return to Lyttelton today. If her further services are not required this season, she will return soon to the United States.
The New Zealand Antarctic supply ship. HM.N.Z.S. Endeavour, left McMurdo Sound on Tuesday on her second and final return voyage from the Antarctic this season. She is due in Lyttelton on February 20.
New Captain For Tanea
The master of the Shell’s coastal tanker Tanea, Captain H. V. Williams, has been appointed Marine Superintendent of the New Zealand Refining Company. He will take up his position on June 1 after a period of training art refineries overseas.
Captain Williams came to New Zealand in 1936 and has been master of the Tanea since February, 1953. During the war he served in the Leander and Achilles, and was a junior gunnery officer on the latter during the Battle of the River Plate. The Tanea’s new master will be Captain. J. P. Marshall, who has been the vessel’s chief officer for the last two years.
Union Company Changes
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. Mr H. H. Doble, chairman and managing-director of the Union Steam Ship Company, will relinquish those offices on April 8 when he will have served in the company in various posts for 49 years. Mr F. K. Macfarlane general manager will succeed him as chairman and managing-direc-tor Mr A. T. Waugh, assistantgeneral manager, will become general manager, and Mr B. S. Cole will be assistant-general
manager. Mr Doble will remain a member of the board.
Troopship Sold To Sitmar
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 14. The former British troopcarrier Oxfordshire, owned by the Bibby Line, but chartered to the British Government since she was built in 1957, has been acquired by the Italian Sitmar Line for their United KingdOmAustralia. New Zealand service, the company's Wellington agents said today The 20.586-ton liner has been taken on a six-year time charter and the company will buy the ship on its expiry.
