SCOTT BASE
U.S. General Impressed Sco'.t Base, New Zealand’s Antarctic station, has made a good impression on the deputy-director of research and development for the United States Army (MajorGeneral C. W. Clark). In Christchurch General Clark said that after a brief tour of the base he had found “the over-all set-up there excellent.”
“The New Zealanders are putting in quite a lot of effort, and they are doing an extremely competent job," he said.
General Clark returned to Christchurch on Tuesday evening after spending five days in the Antarctic looking at facilities and operations at the McMurdo, Byrd and the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Stations. “We went Into various details about certain facilities at each of the major stations and exchanged views and opinions with the Navy. We picked up many useful ideas and we hope the Navy received some from us,” said General Clark. General Clark said he had been shown over the nuclear power plant tbbve McMurdo Station. Improvements were still being made at the site. It could not be compared with the nuclear plant at Camp Century, Greenland, which operated under ice.
